Social event set to connect mums

- SAMANTHA GEE

Rachel Eggers knows what it is like to be a first-time mum, struggling to meet new people and make friends.

Eggers moved back to Nelson from Australia when she was 36 weeks pregnant and said in the months after her daughter was born, she found it difficult to meet other mums.

That led her to start Social Bubs, a network that hosts events in order to connect mums with each other.

This Mother’s Day, Eggers and Catherine Jopson are hosting the second Mums Meet Mums event to do just that.

Eggers said she wanted the event to have a luxury feel, where women could meet up with each other, share stories and have a chance to feel pampered.

There will be a creche at the event so the young ones are looked after and Eggers said there would be a chance for women to have mini make-overs along with massage therapists and photographers on hand.

Eggers said $5 from each ticket $30 ticket would go towards the Nelson Post Natal Depression Support Network.

The cause was close to her heart, having experienced post natal depression herself.

She said the organisation was a vital resource in the community and the only free counselling service available for many new mothers.

Eggers had learnt how important it was that mums took time out for themselves.

‘‘Cherish yourself and cherish who you are becoming and turning into as a mum because you lose your whole first name and everything changes,’’ she said.

‘‘Look after yourself and you are in a much better position to look after your baby.’’

Mums Meet Mums was about connecting women so that they could share stories and develop new friendships.

Eggers said she felt like she wasn’t equipped for motherhood after the arrival of Isabelle and it was through other mums she really learnt how to be a mother.

‘‘It’s so lovely seeing women connecting and supporting each other, that’s what makes me believe in it.’’

Everyone who attended would receive a goody bag with local products, skincare, organic tea and a gratitude journal.

Mums Meet Mums at Founders Heritage Park. May 13 at 1pm. Tickets available through the Social Bubs website.
