The stages of love explored on stage
Did you know there were five stages of falling in love?
Nelson Theatrix’s new concert Love in the Spotlight celebrates love and takes the audience on a journey.
Production manager Saul Gibney said after their inaugural show Wicked Women of the Stage, they had produced several productions including a Halloween cabaret, Broadway Unplugged and most recently a run of Fiddler on the Roof.
Their next big project, Love in the Spotlight, features a wide range of songs from classical to contemporary musical theatre including West Side Story, Chess, Into the Woods, Company, I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, Rent, Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, Avenue Q and Dear Evan Hansen.
Show creator Jessica D’Ath said she was ‘‘thrilled’’ to be able to bring these songs to Nelson.
‘‘There is so much talent in Nelson, and we have got to support these people to be able to perform in shows that really show off what they can do.’’
The show features local singers Alison Cormack, Amanda Creehan, Daniel de Clercq, Jessica D’Ath, Bex Malcolm, Saul Gibney and Michaela Sheehan.
On piano there’s Pauline Boyd and Jude Edgar. D’Ath said all performers have recently had leading roles in local theatrical productions.
D’Ath said ‘‘if you loved Wicked Women of the Stage then Love in the Spotlight is the perfect winter feel good show’’.
She said Nelsonians should come to the concert because it was a rare opportunity to hear ‘‘such as variety’’ of songs from the best of Broadway’s composers.
‘‘It’s going to be a very special concert, which will make you think, laugh, perhaps even cry but definitely appreciate love and the journey it takes us on.’’
Nelson Theatrix started early 2016 to provide Nelsonians of all ages the opportunity to participate in musical theatre productions and concerts.
Love in the Spotlight performs for a limited run at the Nelson Theatre Royal on Saturday.
Tickets start at $13 for kids, and $20 for adults, and are available from the Nelson Theatre Royal Box Office or www.ticketdirect.co.nz.
