Programme to get people moving

- CAROLINE BUDGE

The older body loves to move . . . and that’s a fact.

While up until a couple of decades ago, older people were told to put their feet up and take a well-earned rest, research now shows that continuing to be active is good for the ageing body.

That’s why Age Concern Nelson Tasman has teamed up with both Nelson City and Tasman District Councils to put on a mixed programme of activities this summer – from walking and tai chi, to bowls and singing outdoors – for people aged 65 and over.

The Summer Activity Programme kicks off on Monday February 19, offering 19 events until the end of March, all taking place in outdoor locations across the beautiful Nelson Tasman region.

This is the second year Age Concern Nelson Tasman has put on a summer activities programme, and last year showed that there’s a real appetite for more opportunities for older people to keep active.

Manager Sue Tilby says event such as Tai Chi, in particular, were very popular and they’re hoping more people will benefit this year.

‘‘There are many personal rewards to keeping active – physically, socially and psychologically. This programme offers a wide range of options and we really want people just to come along, give something a go and see what they think. Who knows, it could lead to something they really enjoy and get into.’’

Please note that registrations are required for the visit to the Gardens of the World in Hope on Thursday March 8th.

For all others, people can simply turn up. If you’d like to find out more, please contact Marrit on 03 544 7624 or email: community@ageconcernnt.org.nz, or visit our website at www.ageconcernnt.org.nz.
