Poignant John Campbell sign-off and slew of reality show quips among defining moments

- Calum Henderson

When you boil it down, TV is little more than an endless procession of people saying things. Most of the people who said things on our TVs this year were Americans, or British, or Trudy from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. Most of what they said was easily forgotten.

But some of the people who said things on TV this year were New Zealanders. And a small handful of the things they said were, for one reason or another, memorable.

This is the year in New Zealand television quotes: As an artist who respects creative integrity and intellectual property, I am disgusted at how much you have copied my husband. Natalia Kills’ infamous X Factor tirade. Ka kite ano, and a very good evening indeed. John Campbell’s familiar sign-off, and the final words of Campbell Live’s last ever episode. Are you going to open your mouth? Chrystal Chenery’s assertive moment of kissing on The Bachelor. I’m in the car and I think ‘I’m going dancing’ and then I start laughing hysterically. Pam Corkery nails the mildly maniacal vibe of Dancing With the Stars. They’re screaming to be punched in the face. Brooke from The Block’s appraisal after Sarah and Minanne dissed her architraves. BE BOLD. There were none bolder than Hayden from The Block on our TVs this year. I feel completely and utterly out of control. Peter Williams, teetering on a glideboard on TV One’s Breakfast. I almost died today and my life was saved by Martin Devlin. Mike Hosking, after a perilous encounter with a piece of pineapple.
