CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

-

1 Tivoli Gardens, Denmark

A tradition enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, the historic fairground rides and fancy structures of Tivoli Gardens are all aglow at Christmas time. It gets pretty cold at this time of year, so be sure to wrap up warm before you take in the extensive markets, ice rinks and the light shows — complete with dancing fountains — on the Tivoli Lake.

2 New York City, New York

The Big Apple is known for elaborate Christmas light displays, from department store windows to the big tree at the Rockefeller Centre. However, if you’re keen to check out some residential flair, head to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, where homeowners put on some of the most extravagant Christmas light displays — you’ll see why more than 100,000 people flock to the area every December. The city’s Jewish heritage is also celebrated at the Plaza Hotel, where the world’s largest menorah is lit every evening of Hanukkah.

3 Hong Kong

Hong Kong goes over the top with its Christmas lights display, with 40 buildings along the Victoria Harbour involved in a choreographed light show. During the city’s “WinterFest”, most of the city lights up and businesses try to outdo their rivals with crazy laser displays. Hong Kong Disneyland also gets in on the act, with Main Street decorated with millions of lights and a special Christmas parade.

4 Medellin, Colombia

Colombia’s second-largest city turns into a spectacular wonderland every December, known simply as El Alumbrado, or “The Lighting”. While citizens decorate their houses, balconies and yards with colourful lights, the city itself unveils displays all over major roads, parks and along the Medellin River. These lights are a must-see, with millions of dollars going into the display on the river. It’s a popular place for families to visit, with street performers and vendors selling everything you might want to eat or drink.

5 Gothenburg, Sweden

Known as the Christmas City, Gothenburg is home to Sweden’s largest Christmas market and serves up a brilliantly festive atmosphere every year. Nearly million Christmas lights go into the display that lines the 3km “Lane of Lights” from the Lilla Bommen harbour to Liseberg Amusement Park. There are plenty of activities, events and shopping to keep young and old entertained over the silly season.
