Minimum wage

-

Columnist Mike Hosking may feel that everyone will pay indirectly for the minimum wage to be raised through higher petrol, coffee etc, but, isn’t it the low wage worker subsidising people’s lifestyles? Low wages keep prices down for high earning media personalities like Mr Hosking. New Zealand has had a low wage economy for far too long. Take teachers, nurses, health professionals, social workers, anyone in the “caring” professions whose value continues to be undervalued by the “market economy”. Raising the minimum wage rate highlights how poorly paid many sectors are.
