Free-to-air TV

I have been critical of Sky TV but after watching TVNZ’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games, I think Sky should be awarded a gold medal. Despite the Kiwis participating in lawn bowls most days, they are rarely covered on TVNZ’s free-to-air channels. Monday afternoon we saw weightlifting, air pistol shooting and boxing. I doubt if the combined membership of these sports in NZ would come close to the number of bowlers. And when I did see some bowls, adverts played at the completion of every end.

Sky TV’s coverage of the Winter Olympics by comparison was outstanding, as was the Masters golf. I hope TVNZ and Spark’s bid for the 2019 Rugby World Cup fails. Sports fans deserve better. Allan Horner, Ponsonby.
