The long walk

One of the annoying things for those who work around the parliamentary precinct is the tendency for the escalators between Bowen House and the Beehive to break down. There is some suspicion about these “breakdowns”, which seem to happen when Parliament is in recess and most MPs are away. Those inclined towards conspiracy theories blame sadistic Parliamentary Service staff wanting to make life miserable, or just trying to save on power bills while MPs are away. However, there is now a promise of new escalators to be installed over the summer break. Sceptics remain just that.
