Prosecutors will seek a life sentence for a suburban Chicago man accused of beating a 4-year-old girl to death after she spilled juice on an Xbox video console. Johnathan Fair, 19, of Waukegan, was babysitting his girlfriend’s daughter, Skylar Mendez, on December 13 when she was fatally injured. He brought her to a hospital and initially claimed she’d fallen. She died a few days later.

A shopping centre in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah, was closed after a gunman opened fire and wounded two people. The Fashion Place mall said the shooting happened outside the centre. In Phoenix, Arizona, police say a shooting outside a motel left a young woman dead and five others wounded by gunfire.
