People injured in Whanganui stabbing

-

One person has died after a stabbing in central Whanganui yesterday afternoon, prompting police to begin a homicide investigation.

Detective Inspector Paul Baskett said five people had been taken to Whanganui Hospital and a sixth person had died at the scene.

A worker from medical centre Te Oranganui, who did not want to be named, said a colleague saw the attack, which was soon after 4pm.

Te Oranganui nurses and a doctor ran to the aid of the victims in the New World supermarket carpark.

“When I got there, there was one lying on the ground. It was a big girl. She’d been stabbed, it was bad.”

The worker said two other people who had been stabbed were walking around. “He was holding his neck and blood was pouring out.

“There was another lying down, she wasn’t moving. She was an older lady.” Blood was spattered across the New World carpark.

The worker believed the victims were four members of one family.

Police had cordoned off a house in Wicksteed St and were also carrying out investigations there.

Liverpool St and Wicksteed St were also cordoned off.

A St John spokeswoman told Stuff two people had been taken to Whanganui Hospital in a critical condition while a further two were in a moderate condition.

Baskett said one person was taken into custody immediately after the incident and police were not looking for anyone else.
