Three of the best . . . VEGAN PIES
Next to fish and chips and sausage rolls, meat pies are considered classic Kiwi tucker. In the past, a move to veganism has signalled a life sans this savoury delight. But not any more: from supermarkets to petrol stations, here are three of the best vegan pies now available.
Tart Bakery’s Mince and Cheese ($6 from Tart Bakery)
Good luck to anyone trying to tell the difference between this and a traditional mince and cheese pie. Made from textured soy protein, the filling is extremely close to meat mince. And the gravy is a divine concoction that includes tomato, worcestershire and barbecue sauces. Encased in an impressively flaky pastry, this pie more than gives classic mince and cheese a run for its money.
I Heart Pies’ Lentil Mince and Cheese ($4.99 from select supermarkets)
This is also an incredible example of creating the sensation of eating a real mince pie. From the pastry casing to the lentil “mince” filling, these soft little bites offer a mild taste and, available in mini party packs, are a great option for feeding a vegan crowd.
Sunfed Meat’s Satay Chicken ($3.80 from Wild Bean cafes)
With bold satay flavours, this is a great option if you're a fan of the unusual sounding — but definitely delicious — butter chicken pie that’s become popular over the past few years. With hints of coconut and a sprinkle of sesame seeds on its crispy top, we recommend this one next time you’re looking for a snack on the road.
