Eat fish and chips on the beach

From Ahipara to Ahuriri; Mangonui to the Mount; Waikanae to the West Coast – New Zealand is spoilt for spots to enjoy fish and chips by the sea. Whether you’re watching a roman c sunset or feeding the family, fish and chips eaten out of newspaper with salt on your skin and sand between your toes is the quintessen al Kiwi experience. Wash it down with that other Kiwi classic: a bo le of sweet, fizzy L&P for a treat. It’s what summers are made of.

Indulge in a feast of crayfish at Kaikōura

There are no prizes for picking the best spot in New Zealand to enjoy a seafood delicacy. The name of the place gives it away, really. Kai means ‘food’ in Māori. Kōura is crayfish. The best way to eat crayfish in Kaikōura is beside the ocean, hot and simple, served with a squeeze of lemon. There’s nothing quite like parking up beside the waves and indulging in the freshest of seafood just metres from where it was caught.

Visit New Zealand’s most-loved beach, Ōhope Beach

It’s a pre y big achievement to be rated the best bit of 14,000km of coastline, but Ōhope managed to take the crown. Not far from Whakatāne, Ōhope Beach is an idyllic, iconic piece of postcard-perfect Kiwiana. Think blooming pōhutukawa, fish and chips, jandals and frisbees. It’s no wonder that Kiwis love it here. From the entrance of Ōhiwa Harbour to West End, Ōhope Beach stretches for 11 glorious kilometres of golden sand, so you’ll never be jostling for a spot.

Go fishing at Huka Prawn Park

On the banks of the Waikato River, just north of Lake Taupō, you’ll find the unique a rac on of Huka Prawn Park – the only place in New Zealand where you can fish for your own prawns. Catch as many as you like and cook them on site, or take them home on ice for later. Spend the day at the park to enjoy the many ac vi es on offer – from riding an aqua trike or paddling a SUP across the prawn ponds, to soaking in the geothermal foot bath or dining in the only alfresco riverside restaurant in Taupō.
