IT’S A SHORE THING

If you want a scullery, a pool, a spa pool, and a beach to boot this is the property for you,

When Rick and Debbie Soar built their Omaha home they already knew about beac living and made sure they chose suitable materials for the job.

The couple previously owned a bach in the beachside town, and Rick used to manage building companies, so he project-managed the two-level build himself.

It has a pool and a spa pool on its corner site at 2 Taiawa Place, only a minute or so from the beach.

The build, designed by LTD Architectural Design Studio, was completed in late 2017.

The couple put a lot of thought into what they wanted. “We knew the materials for a beach environment and we went to great pains to use only materials that are long lasting, hard wearing and low maintenance,” says Rick.

“We used a timber weatherboard system that has no nails so there’s no rusting of nails or anything like that. Coloursteel roof. Cedar.”

The location is wonderful, as well, he says. “We’re only about 120m from high tide, about 100m to the cafe, 200m to the surf club. It’s a cul de sac-type street so you don’t get through traffic, and there are permanents around the area, too, which makes it a bit of a community.”

Rick and Debbie like to travel and one of the reasons they built the house as they did was so it could be locked up and left.

The main living is on the ground level of the house, opening to the pool and spa pool area, and there’s a covered outdoor area.

The property is fully fenced and has a cedar shed for bikes, tools and toys, leaving the garage free for cars.

Debbie loves her Fluid Interiors designer kitchen which has a big scullery, two ovens, an induction cooktop and a hot and cold water tap.

The lower level is open plan with tinted windows for privacy, and the master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with a heated floor. The guest powder room, says Debbie, is pretty special — the wallpaper is from Spain and the lights are by London designer Lee Broom
