Kelly Dennett checks into the Taumeasina Island Resort in Samoa

-

Getting there: The resort sent a shuttle to pick us up from Faleolo Airport, a 45-minute drive. Our driver was on time, bearing water, leis and a sign with our name.

Check-in experience: Ridiculously easy. Our heavy suitcases were swept away, we were given a champagne glass filled with (somewhat disappointingly) juice, and the whole process was quick and easy.

Room: We were upgraded to a double bedroom villa with a kitchen, laundry, balcony and lounge. The place was gorgeous, spacious and functional, as well as clean. What’s so good about this place? Aside from the great facilities and gorgeousness of the resort, the service was a standout. I lost count of the smiles and greetings from every one of the staff, right down to the groundsman who fist-bumped us in the mornings. What’s in the neighbourhood? Apia, with its restaurants, bars, and markets is a 20 to 30-minute walk.

Toiletries: Basic shampoo, conditioner, and soap. Food and drink: There are two restaurants, upmarket Sina’s, and middle-of-the-road Lapita. We dined at Lapita several times and the food was a solid seven or eight with traditional Samoan or Western options available. Breakfast was average to good — the best bit was the dedicated egg chef who made amazing omelettes. Room service is available and there are two bars.

The bed: A good size, nice linen, but slightly too hard. A room with a view? Our balcony overlooked the lagoon, which backs on to some local’s homes. Bathroom: Good shower pressure with a waterfall-type head. I was surprised the grout was already mouldy, despite being a new resort.

Free Wi-Fi? Yes, and a decent amount. Two of us were constantly on our phones, playing music, for five nights.

Noise: Very peaceful. The only noise was the locals swimming, later taken over by pounding rain and wind from Cyclone Gita. Exercise facilities: There is a gym with treadmills, yoga mats, balls, a rowing machine, and some other gadgets. Sunset yoga near the beach is also available. Perfect for: Everybody.
