It’s a bit odd

A Massachusetts woman thought she was signing up to run a half marathon near her home. Sheila Pereira, 42, learned too late that the Worcester City Half Marathon was actually being held in Worcester, England, and not Worcester, Massachusetts, on September 15. She decided to run 21km that day anyway, only on the US side of the pond. Pereira sent the English race organisers a picture of her route from Worcester to Shrewsbury. Her fitness app showed she completed it in 2 hours, 5 minutes. The Worcester City Half Marathon sent a medal, a shirt and encouragement to participate in person in next year’s race.

A Long Island firefighter is taking his colleagues to court for what he says was incessant teasing about his weight. The New York Post reports John Munro filed a discrimination lawsuit in federal court against fellow firefighters in Hauppauge. The nearly 158kg Munro says he was called names like “cow” and harangued for taking up two seats in the fire truck.

Authorities in northwest Poland mulled the evacuation of some 42,000 people after a giant British World War II seismic bomb was found buried in the waterway leading to the port of Szczecin. The Tallboy is 6m long and was found during works in a channel running through Swinoujscie to Szczecin. With an impact range of over 10km, it is the biggest wartime bomb found in Poland’s waters. Experts are discussing ways of removing it. Tallboys were used to destroy especially hard structures. The region was then under German control.
