Soulful spaces and places — like the Melbourne home of New Zealander Leah Hudson-Smith and her partner Wally Mahoney which features in our cover story — don’t require big budgets or the latest designer couch. Instead they display personal touches with stories and meaning attached. Similarly, the elegant Hawke’s Bay garden on page 16 was a passion project for its owners, while a work studio at the Auckland Gallery (page 20) is enlivened by the dedication and care of its restoration artists. There’s a reason such spots feel inspiring the minute you walk into them — it’s because they have soul.
