Dancing in the park

-

IF YOU want something to do this weekend but don’t want to spend a penny then Auckland Council has you covered.

Its Music in Parks and Movies in Parks events are running from Friday to Sunday offering live entertainment and big-screen hits all completely free. All you need to do is show up and enjoy.

If you want to get down, head to

Uptown Sounds this Saturday for an afternoon of live music. Kicking off at 2pm at Basque Park in Eden Terrace, the line-up is headlined by recently reformed indie champions Pluto. You’ll have to keep an eye on your dance stamina as before they hit the stage you’ll be treated to the laid-back stylings of Ed Waaka, the summery reggae of Sojourn and the smooth alt-rap stylings of The BackChat.

There’s even a kids’ stage, fronted by Suzy Cato, to entertain the littlies.

Parents — or extremely lovely uncles and aunts — will want to herd the kids to the Myers Park

Medley concert on Sunday. This free family fun day promises an afternoon of entertainment, live performances and more than a few surprises. Running till 4pm you’ll be treated to performances from Dusky Musk, Lesbos, AKSamba, Caluzzi Cabaret, 3 Ring Riot, White Chapel Jak and Happy Weekend.

And all the lovers who haven’t booked anything for Valentine’s Day have been gifted a Get-OutOf-Jail-Free card in the form of an outdoor screening of the smash hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians at Kingsland’s Nixon Park on Friday evening. Pack a picnic and pretend you planned it all along . . .

On Saturday night the incredibly funny family flick Abominable screens at Whangaparaoa’s Stanmore Bay Park. Both movies begin at 8.30pm, with plenty of prefilm activities beforehand.
