For this week’s At Home issue we visit Jonathan and Sheree Burge — the New Zealand couple who, after working their way around the world, chose to settle in Melbourne and build a truly remarkable family home. The house is both dramatic and whimsical, and, as they explained to writer Johanna Thornton, perfectly met their brief for an artistically beautiful home that could withstand the knocks of everyday living for their family of five.

For many of us, that everyday living has been put to the test over the past few months. Our homes are where we play and argue, where we have raucous conversations around the kitchen table, where we’ll find a quiet corner to read, or where we’ll sprawl out on the floor to watch TV. We’ve spent more time than ever staring at the walls that surround us and maximising every inch of space. And, if you’re like me, you will have spent a lot of time working out how you can expand it, paint it or refurbish it — which is the fun part. I’m sure you’ll be inspired by the Burge’s home.
