Light the Way

When Julie and Bryan Hart decided to turn her hobby dabbling in candlemaking into a business that could involve their autistic adult daughter they took the time to first study the craft — known as chandlery — overseas. Now, several years on, they have launched Bentley & Hart, with the One by One collection of handpoured and opulently scented candles. Most are in elegant black and white vessels, but a special deep blue version is known as Bella’s Candle, drawing on 24-year-old daughter’s Daniella’s nickname and her scent preferences.

“Daniella takes great pride in being a chandler,” says Julie. Finding a niche industry that would develop opportunities for her and others like her, who often struggle to find meaningful work, also sees the couple make a small contribution to charity from sales. Candles cost either $59 or $89 depending on size, from a range of 12 scents infused in a coconut soy wax blend. Smaller gift tins are available also. See Bentleyandhart.co.nz
