NYT editor resigns
The New York Times’ editorial page editor James Bennet has resigned amid outrage over an op-ed by a Republican senator who advocated using military force to quell protests — outrage that only grew when it was revealed the editor had not read the piece. Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton’s op-ed, titled “Send in the Troops” caused a revolt among Times journalists, some saying it endangered black employees. The senator characterised the protesters “rioters” and as “nihilist criminals simply out for loot and the thrill of destruction”, and said “cadres of leftwing radicals like Antifa [were] infiltrating protest marches” — a claim the Times said was misinformation. Some staff members called in sick in protest and the Times said a review found that the piece did not meet its standards.
