Submarine missing

-

Fears are growing for the lives of 53 people on board a missing Indonesian submarine after an oil slick was found near its dive location in Bali. Two naval ships with sonar capabilities have been deployed to help search for the vessel, which is thought to have sunk into a 700m trough while conducting a drill. The German-built KRI Nanggala 402 was scheduled to carry out live torpedo exercises when it asked for permission to dive on Wednesday, authorities said. The 43-year-old submarine was about 100km north of the resort island of Bali when contact was lost, according to Indonesia’s defence ministry. It has requested help from Singapore and Australia which have submarine rescue vessels in their fleets.
