Celebrity chef adds to pie-judging heft

-

The job of judging the nation’s best pie is a rather serious business.

So the refined tastebuds of celebrity chef Peter Gordon were enlisted this year to help judge NZ Bakels Supreme Pie Awards.

The awards, put on hold last year thanks to Covid-19, are NZ’s the largest annual food competition.

More than 4000 pies from 462 bakers across the 11 categories competed for national honours.

Each pie came in a numbered box with no other identifying information so each pie could be judged purely on its merits.

The gold-award winners were then compared to find the Supreme Winner. But the results are being kept strictly under wraps for a few more days, with the top pie to be revealed at the swanky awards dinner at the Hilton on Tuesday might.
