Homeless not campers
The Government doesn’t want homeless people becoming victims of a proposed clampdown on freedom camping. Tighter rules are on the cards for self-contained vehicles — and possibly fines and confiscation for breaches. MBIE senior policy adviser Fraser Pearce says they don’t want a loophole where freedom campers pretend to be homeless. He says on the other hand those not living by choice in a vehicle shouldn’t be unfairly penalised.
