Maori lifespan gap
There continues to be a large gap in lifespans between Maori and non-Maori. Stats NZ data on death rates between 2017-19 shows life expectancy for Maori men is 73.4 and 77.1 for women. Non-Maori men live 80.9 years, and women reach 84.4. Senior demographer Kim Dunstan says it’s a significant gap. Life expectancy overall keeps going up but at a slower rate. Population estimates and projections manager Hamish Slack says life expectancy rose most in the late 1980s to early 2000s.
