Sadly — time to move on
Our Treasures
KIWI NORTH is sorry to have to say goodbye to Robin Lieffering, who has held the position of chairwoman of the Kiwi North board of trustees for the past year after serving as Whangarei District Council representative on the board since 2004.
Robin brought great skills to the position. Her wisdom, sharp mind, energy and good sense of humour supported many decisions that were made during the years she voluntarily served the Kiwi North community.
Robin’s community service is extensive and includes the Whangarei District Council, heading the Whangarei Heads Ratepayer Association, heading the Whangarei Heads Primary School Board and as a volunteer advocate for the Whangarei Advocacy Service.
After training and serving as a primary school teacher, Robin studied the Japanese language through Massey University and adult evening classes. Further study at Canterbury led to teaching in high schools and polytechnics. Teaching English as a second language during the day and Japanese in the evening illustrates her energy and abilities. Robin won two scholarships issued by the Japanese government to study in Japan and after many visits to the country assisted in marketing Japanese language programmes.
Originally from Christchurch, Robin had many wonderful holidays in Northland and came to live here in 1975. This wonderful environment taught her about conservation.
‘‘One of the Kiwi North’s great assets is the exciting connections it makes between the environment and history in all its aspects,’’ Robin says. ‘‘This and the working clubs with their restoration activities and the active education programme provide huge opportunities for learning and fun. Such a place engenders great loyalty from all associated with it including staff, supporters, volunteers, trust board and club members. With great regret I feel it is time to move on and I am pleased that all aspects of Kiwi North are in an exciting phase of development.’’
Margie Matthews has been appointed chairwoman of Kiwi North Board of Trustees. She brings many skills and much experience to the position.
Kiwi North (Whangarei Museum, Kiwi House and Heritage Park) is open daily from 10am to 4pm.
