Fun street tour a total scream

- By Mikaela Collins

Scary creatures will lurk in the shadows ready to give you a fright. Forget A Nightmare on Elm Street, Northland Youth Theatre (NYT) will bring spookiness to Whanga¯rei next week with NYTmare on Bank St.

For more than 10 years NYT has haunted different locations around Whanga¯rei for their Halloween FrightNYTe, including the Quarry Arts Centre, the Old Library, Barge Park and the Himalayan Trading Post.

This year they are back with more scares, but this time at their base at 86 Bank St.

Northland Youth Theatre manager Hayley Clark said NYTmare on Bank St, which she co-directed with Naomi Bromberg, was a moving performance as the audience will walk with the cast as a story unfolds.

“You walk through a space that is set up with jump scares and scary creatures that lurk in the shadows. Everything is prebooked because we can only have 12 people through at a time so it’s a really small audience and it means you get a little bit more scare — it helps with the scare factor,” she said.

Clark said the show, which has a cast of 20, is recommended for ages 10 years and older and aimed at children around 10 to 12.

“We want it to be fun and frightful, not terrifying,” she said. “Some people are scared and stand in the background and watch, you get nervous laughter because it’s scary and dark and you don’t know what’s going to happen, but generally people enjoy themselves.

“It’s a fun scare, we don’t want to give you nightmares forever. It’s for people who like a little bit of a fright.”

Clark said the FrightNYTe shows sell out every year and this is the first time they are doing five shows.

“It’s a fun affordable thing to take your kids along to. Halloween is quite popular now ... People like to be scared, and the cast love to scare people.”

The tours are held at Northland Youth Theatre, 86 Bank St, every night at 5.20pm starting Tuesday with the last show on Saturday, October 27.

Bookings are essential so email office@nyt.org.nz to ensure you don’t miss out on being scared.
