Wahine Toa Event

‘Wāhine Toa of Te Taitokerau’ was the theme at an International Women’s Day inspired event hosted by Connected.govt.nz with support from NorthChamber and The Orchard Events and Business Hub on Friday April 9 2021.

The event was a chance to network and to acknowledge the work being done to support and create opportunities through training, education, employment, and advocacy for wāhine in Te Taitokerau.

Guest speakers were Tania McInnes Work Services Manager at Ministry of Social Development, Sophie Wiltshier Business Innovation Growth Team Leader at Northland Inc and Linda Marsh current Regional Coordinator for Hearts and Minds, a community development agency with an integrated focus on wellbeing, and former programme coordinator for several business programmes at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. The speakers echoed several key themes, encouraging women to back themselves, support each other and embrace education. Linda Marsh shared about the profound life changes she had seen happen for former students, and the enormous value in undertaking training and further education, “the benefits extend way past the simple act of learning new skills.”

Katie Greengrass, Connected’s Whangarei based Employment Liaison Advisor, shared information about Connected. The service was launched in August 2020 to help New Zealanders find government support for employment, education, and training, including the support created in response to COVID-19.
