Stand by for fluoride rent-a-mob noise
At last — great news for Northland. Town water supplies will soon have mandatory fluoride added. This will prevent much of the tooth decay in children which t is so widespread, painful and tragic.
All we have to do now is wait for the outcry from the anti-mandate brigade and the conspiracy theorists.
Firstly the anti-mandaters who object to compulsory medication.
No problem, just catch rain water for drinking and cooking — you don’t have to use the town supply so it needn’t affect you. In any case chemicals are already added by mandate to make the water safe.
Some say it is not necessary because anyone can take fluoride tablets for the same effect. This ignores a significant number of parents who wouldn’t get around to it so it would be cruel to make their children suffer unnecessarily.
Of course the conspiracy theorists will point to dire consequences of adding “poison” to their water. The answer is to seek advice from reliable sources instead of misinformation from the fringe element on the internet.
When the professional protesters appear on the street with their placards I will be tooting to say “Go away” — not in support.

Fish not silly
The good people of Whangārei need not worry about the fluoride in waste water going into the oceans — sea water already contains 1.5 ppm fluoride. Fish are not silly, they have wonderful teeth. Fluoride saves on visits to cleaner fish.
The argument about “mass medication” is over. The Government has mandated fluoride be added to the city water. If you don’t like it, don’t drink it. Society is not compelled to cater for every Tom, Dick and Harriet’s opinion — only facts. Dennis Horne Howick
Pedestrian risk
Having occasion to drive up Memorial Drive I mused on the logic relating to the speed limits.
From Riverside up to the Old Parua Bay Rd junction it is 50km/h then it rises to 70km/h through to the Monument parking area.
The reason I question the logic is that the footpath goes from Riverside to the junction only. After that there is no footpath on Memorial Drive, meaning pedestrians are at a greater risk with the higher speed limit.
I suggest the council should give some urgent consideration to this and remedy the situation.

Bush faux pas
It was the “decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq,” Finally former president George W. Bush tells the truth even if by accident.
History remembers the good and bad of life but what will it say about that president?
