Oruku Landing the project that won’t go away

-

Last year, we ratepayers, actively protested against the establishment of this “facility’.

Now it has reared its ugly head again.

It matters little that the design has been “scaled-back” — it’s in the wrong place.

What about building it near the newly- proposed yacht marina, beyond the bascule bridge?

In the article ( Advocate, July 31) there is a paragraph the reads:

“More than 5000 people submitted their views on the proposals last year — nearly 80 per cent were against the old proposals”.

Will the public be consulted yet again, re the proposed changes?

We do not want another “public meeting” which was a debacle, and where we were unable to ask questions, and were expected to verbalise again what we had already submitted on paper or by email.

It’s the disruption to traffic that is the main problem, as well as a conference centre whose future is debatable, and which will detract from the leafy vista across the harbour from the Town Basin.

Whangārei is growing exponentially, (consider new subdivisions in Kamo West, outer Maunu, Glenbervie, and Tikipunga, — where, as well as four retirement or lifestyle villages within a 5km radius,

there’s strip development of subdivisions along Corks Rd), and how is the increased traffic to be managed?

Riverside Drive cannot be widened, and is the only city outlet to Onerahi, and Whangārei Heads, and is also fed by the increased traffic over the bascule bridge.

Our councillors need to drive these routes at peak hours — and experience gridlock (and the condition of the roads) for themselves.
