War in sharp focus

Russia and China’s relationship has been a focus at Apec. Jacinda Ardern met China’s President Xi Jinping (pictured) while attending the Apec summit in Bangkok and said they spoke about Russia’s war on Ukraine, and North Korea’s missile launches. Herald deputy editor Thomas Coughlan says the situation in Ukraine has overshadowed every international summit this year. He says Ardern started at the East Asia summit, went on to a trade mission in Vietnam, then to Apec — with the war in the backdrop of all those.
