Detainment rules
The Government has announced new humane-treatment rules for anyone detained by Police, Defence Forces, or other New Zealand agencies during offshore deployments. Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta says it’s the final recommendation of the Operation Burnham inquiry which looked at potential Defence Force war crimes in Afghanistan. They include safeguards for treating detained people, and procedures for agencies to follow during deployment. Mahuta says it will ensure personnel conduct themselves in ways that reflect our values.
