Singles champions found

- Gwen Lawson

The Centre Champion of Champion singles were played last weekend and it is congratulations to Sue Wightman of Mangawhai who defeated Patricia Murray of Kensington in the final for the women, 18-10. Joe Thorburn of Kensington was the winner of the men’s division after defeating Duncan Rhind of Waipu, 21-10.

Both matches were hardfought battles and thanks to Andy of Kensington who streamed the final of the women live on Kensington’s Facebook page. Both winners are now eligible to represent Northland in the NZ Champion of Champions.

The pairs were won by Wendy Sarjeant and Christine Lineham of Mangawhai over Diane Klomp and Sue Rokstad of Dargaville. The men were won by John Carruthers and P. Williams of Maungaturoto, who defeated Mike Butler and A. Wilson of Whangārei.

The previous weekend, the Premier 2 representative players played in Auckland against North Harbour, Waikato, Counties-Manukau, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland.

It was a hard day at the office for players but they would have had great experience playing against the rep teams from other centres.

The event was won by Hawke’s Bay.

Congratulations to Hikurangi club’s Big G, Johanna and Sam who won the final of the Bowls3Five against Kerikeri and will now travel to Wellington on May 3 to play in the NZ final of this event. Fourteen teams will take part. Good luck to our team.

National Interclub Sevens will be played on April 4-7. Representing Northland will be Kensington (women) and Kamo (men).
