Congratulations to Kensington

- Gwen Lawson

I start this report with congratulations to the Kensington 1-5 Mixed 6s team, representing Northland, for their success in the Regional Mercedes Cup event held at Kamo Club last weekend.

It was a nail-biting affair with Northland pulling off the win with equal win points with North Harbour but scoring two shots more over the five rounds and winning the competition. It is a while since Northland won this event, as the competition is very strong coming from Counties-Manukau, Auckland, North Harbour and Far North.

The winning combination was Grant Jones (singles), Barbara Hopper and

Eileen Conaghan (pairs), Lew Hill, Andy McKinlay and Denise Barnes (triples).

A big thank you to Kamo club, and all their helpers, control, umpires and markers on the day.

Well done to the Hikurangi combination of Sam Nelson, Jo Hood and Graeme Lawrence, who represented us at the same time in the Bowls NZ Bowls3Five finals in Wellington.

It was tough going for them, matches lost in tight finishes and some very strong teams among the other qualifiers. The contest was finally won by Nelson combination of very experienced bowlers.

Our players will have learnt a lot from the experience.

The final competitions will be NZ Champion of Champions events, playing in July with the singles and pairs in Dunedin, the triples and fours in Auckland and the mixed pairs in Hastings.

The Champion of Champions to find our winner in the Mixed Pairs will be held on May 18.
