Kohai and Kendall win Hanning Cup

Whangaroa

The Whangaroa Golf Club members enjoyed lovely late summer weather for their opening day on Saturday.

The mixed pairs tournament saw Kohai Kingi and Kendall Wyatt-Logan take out the Hanning Cup with a score of 60 nett, while the runners-up were Larry and Christine Berridge with 61.

Elsewhere, domestic results for the past week were as follows. From the vets on Monday, February 23, men: P Frischknec­ht 43, N Olsen, J Bassett 38, B Rouse, S Tansey 37, ladies: B Pengelly 41, V Moffat 38; Nearest pin: T Miliona (men), V Moffat (ladies); and 2s by V Moffat, S Tansey.

From the mixed haggle last Thursday (February 26), men: John Parker, J Rogers, C Baldwin 41, Dave Robinson 39, K Robertson 38, ladies:S Dangen 41, W Parker, T Nikora 35; with 2s by Baldwin, J Parker, J Solomon, T Jones, K Graham and S Dangen.

And, from men’s play on Sunday (March 1), seniors: Bill Sherman won the Eagles Tray with 66 nett, and Colin Baldwin won the Vets’ Tray also with 66 nett, juniors: R Fabricus 67, I Easterbroo­k, F Stewart 68; and a 2 by K Kingi.

Okaihau

The Okaihau golfers completed the first round of their divisional championsh­ip matchplay tournament on Sunday and the event’s D-grade was completed with Dick Tohu defeating Mike Cottam and round 2 to be played on, or before March 8. As well, a stableford competitio­n was also played on the first day of autumn. Results were, Warren Gould, Andrew Maraki (both) 43 points, Tony Drader and Dereck Rumble 41, Peter Roux, Garry Webb 40, Wayne Flood, Rap Stevens 39, Darryl Birchall, Don Partington 38, Chris Low, Alan Spray, Cam Birch, Arthur Beren, David Booth 37. Also, 2s by D Birchall, G Webb and Chris Williams with the latter taking the 2s jackpot.

Kaitaia men

Ivan Yuretich shot his age of 81 with 44 stableford­s to take out the Kaitaia men’s Thursday haggle at Ahipara last week. Other results were B Jones 44, then Bill Steed 41, B Dormer 40 and J Hincho 39. In other news, club captain thanked everyone for working behind the scenes to ensure the opening tournament on Saturday was a successful and memorable affair. This Saturday, March 7, sees the qualifying rounds of the Redan Cup contested. The sheet with the draw is on the clubhouse board and round 1 will be played on Sunday.
