Wins, points at ends at Cooper’s

-

The top performers from the recently completed summer of bowling at Cooper’s Beach were recognised at the club’s annual closing day and prizegiving for the 2014/15 season.

The ceremony, which took place on Thursday, May 14, recognised all the domestic championship winners and various members for their achievements at centre level. Highlights saw the Most Improved Player Of the Year awards going to Gaye Parker ( women) and Clive Scahill (men), and the Barry Pridham trophy for the Sportsperson and Club Member of the Year being presented to a well- deserved Eileen Pickard.

The prizegiving was preceded by the traditional closing day tournament, the Darby and Joan Mixed Drawn Pairs, which attracted 32 members and was played over three games of 1 hour 10 minutes on wins, ends and points. After three games everyone enjoyed a pot- luck lunch before the results were announced with Alan Bright and Anne Burke first with 3 wins, 24 ends, 44 points, followed by Trevor Smith and Shirley Marr in runner- up spot, with Nancy Page and Malcolm Maclean taking third place overall.

In other news, 12 teams converged on Cooper’s Beach to contest the first tournament of the winter programme, the Archibald Motors Any Combination Classic Fours, on May 19. The Tuesday event featured players from Kaeo, Far North RSA, Kaitaia Combined, Houhora, Australia and the host club, who played the unusual format over four rounds of 70 minutes with round 1 comprised of singles and triples, round 2 of threebowl pairs, round 3 of 2x4x2 pairs ( where teams had to change partners) and round 4 played as fours.

Results were, Barry Allison,

Alan Thom, Sam Allison, Delphine Edwards ( Combined/ Australia/ Cooper’s) 12 points, +24 differential, 1 ( i. e. first); Adele Gardner, Freda May, Margaret Perry, Glenis Muir (Far North RSA) 12, -3, 2; Dennis Breckon, Jill Phillips, Ray Thorburn, Gaye Parker ( Cooper’s/ Combined) 10, +46, 3. On behalf of the club, organisers thanked the generous sponsors and all who assisted on the day.
