Emergency rescues to be captured through the lens
The Northland Emergency Services Trust, which operates the region’s rescue helicopters, is adding another skillset to its team’s collective CV, thanks to Canon New Zealand’s offer to train the pilots and paramedics in the art of capturing high- quality rescue footage.
The company’s support includes the donation of two PowerShot SX610HS cameras, which will enable the pilots to record rescues more clearly, offer quality imagery to news agencies, and post photos to Facebook without having to be at a computer — valuable during NEST’s time-sensitive operations.
Trust chief executive and pilot Peter Turnbull was enthusiastic about the possibilities for capturing rescue missions in the coming months, once the team had had a chance to take in the information at their personalised photography training session, which took place at the helicopter base in Whangarei on Tuesday.
“This training will provide a complete overview of everything the team needs to know about the cameras, which will give us the ability to further document NEST’s involvement in the community whilst at the same time allowing us to release emergency services updates as soon as possible,” he said.
Guiding the team through the cameras, the training provided a crash course in composition, shutter speed, aperture and ISO levels so the team will be able to capture press-ready rescue footage when attending a callout.
“We are grateful for the thoughtful donation from Canon, and look forward to putting the training to good use,” Mr Turnbull added.
“All donations are immensely appreciated, as they help improve the level of service we offer our community.”
