Repairs to the walkway at Mangonui to be delayed

-

Permanent repairs to a walkway at Mangonui have been delayed so the disruption does not affect the Last of the Summer Wine Festival being held on the waterfront on March 24.

The Far North District Council became aware of subsidence that had undermined a section of the wooden walkway, footpath and road between the police station and the fish shop about two weeks ago.

Contractor Fulton Hogan installed scaffolding beneath the walkway to prevent further damage.

Pedestrian and vehicle access has also been cordoned off.

The road would be reduced to one lane while repair work was being carried out, a council spokesman said.

Because of that work would not begin until the week starting March 25, to avoid disrupting the festival.

That would also take advantage of low tides that would fall between mid to latemorning that week.

The contractor was already committed to other work during a similar low-tide window earlier in March, the spokesman said.
