Contest aims to show ‘human side’ of police
The Far North will host the 2018 police darts nationals when the annual tournament runs at Awanui Hotel from Friday to Sunday, March 9-11.
Hosted by the Far North Darts Association, the New Zealand National Police Darts Tournament will start on the Friday evening with representative games where the New Zealand police men’s and women’s teams will play their Far North counterparts. The event will start with a meet and greet and a light supper before proceedings are officially opened by Far North Mayor John Carter.
Convenor Shane Godinet noted the tournament will then run through the weekend, with prizegiving on Sunday afternoon.
On behalf of the organisers, he also expressed appreciation to the local business community for supporting the event.
“I approached many local sponsors to donate prizes with a view to promoting the North, its people and its products and the response was overwhelming.”
Godinet noted the annual tournament is played in a different venue each year, with an emphasis on promoting the game of darts, bringing police into local communities and show they have a ‘human side’. Now in its 44th year, it is one of the longest running events on the police sporting calendar.
