The Northland Age

Senseless census

- WAYNE BROWN Mangonui

There are apparently more than 500 staff in Wellington employed at Statistics NZ, who are behind the current senseless census.

In my local Post Office the staff have fielded over 150 inquiries from folk who have received nothing about the coming census, yet the Post Office is not paid to offer advice or clarify the lack of info from Statistics, who proudly vaunt their online skills, yet display no people or population skills at all.

No info was sent to anyone who uses a PO box as their address, so none of those people will exist. How come the Government and Statistics can find me when they want tax payments or info about my business, yet don’t know where I am for the census? Could I request that in future it goes the other way? Whole areas of Northland, where the very people who overpaid and underworked Wellington bureaucrats need to know about, simply wont exist after this bungled census. Bad luck for the DHB or Northland roading projects.

This is what you get from Steven Joyce’s great move to centralise everything in Wellington, when what they should have been doing was moving bureaucrats out into the provinces, where it is cheaper to feed them and they might find out a bit about the country they are supposed to be governing.
