More medal glory for Corinne Smith

-

Corinne Smith added to her impressive CV by claiming four medals at the New Zealand Masters Track and Field Championships at Kensington Park last week.

Competing in the master women’s 50-54 division, Smith won two gold and two silver medals over the course of the three-day meet.

On Friday, the veteran Kerikeri-based athlete won gold in the 3000m track walk, and silver in the 3000m run. She then repeated the feat on Sunday by winning the 5000m track walk — and only narrowly pipped at the post by the winner of the master men’s 50-54 event, Lyndon Hoahia — and finished runnerup in the 5000m run of the same age/ gender grade to claim silver. She also placed fourth in the 1500m run on Saturday.

The results add to what’s becoming a very successful campaign on the summer circuit for Smith. She also won the 3000m track walk event at the 2018 Athletics Auckland Track and Field Championships last month (held on February 17 at Towers Track, Mount Smart) and in the process, also claimed the ‘visitor’s gold medal’ for being the first senior women across the line overall.

Having raced under the Northland Masters Athletics Association banner at the national masters, and Athletics Whangarei in Auckland, Smith will line up to compete at the Athletics New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Hamilton from tomorrow till Sunday.

One of her biggest supporters is former Northland compatriot Karen Davison, who congratulated her Far North friend and said it was achievements overlooked.

Davison herself also competed in Whangarei last weekend (under the North Harbour Bays Athletics banner) and didn’t do too badly either, winning gold in the master women’s 45-49 group in the 3000m track walk.

“I was pretty happy as the time was faster than the one I recorded at the same event at Mt Smart a fortnight ago,” she said. She also claimed a provincial title and a centre gold at the Auckland event last month. important her
