Kaitaia women tee new season off with ceremony

KAITAIA VETS. The turnout of 26 Kaitaia vets enjoyed warm conditions with bit of a breeze which led to some good golf being shown at their weekly hitout at Ahipara on Monday last week (February 26). The men played for the Pud Ray Trophy and the ladies played for the Rex Dawson Cup, with points added up over the year for both titles.

Top placegette­rs were, men: Bruce McDonald 33 on countback from Bobby Robson, Terry Shaw 29, John Doolan 28, Travis Tahana (a new vet) with 27, and Mike Masters 26; ladies: Brenda Muller 34, Noeleen Robson 32, Rosaleen Steed 30. Also, nearest pin prizes for Bruce McDonald (men) and Raewyn Shaw (ladies), and 2s for McDonald, Robson and Lorna Subritzky, while the lucky chicken draw went to Anne Squire.

Monday this week (March 5) , the vets reported an even better turnout of 32 players who endured very hot and muggy conditions to play the first round of the Wilson Shield.

Top scores came from, men: Dave Squire 38, Travis Tahana 34, Simon Yates 31, Terry Shaw 29, John Doolan, Bruce McDonald 28, and, ladies: Raewyn Shaw 29, Liz Proctor 29, Rosaleen Steed 26, Anne Squire 26. There were also nearest the pin prizes for McDonald (men) and Squire (ladies), 2s for Clive Helleur, Travis Tahana, and Raewyn Shaw, while Anders Hedberg won the lucky chicken draw. KAITAIA LADIES. The Kaitaia ladies held their traditiona­l opening day ceremony last Wednesday, February 28, with a great turnout reported. The competitio­n was J Logan, and the winners were, Noeleen Robson 40, Anne Squire 38, Rosaleen Steed 37, Brenda Muller 37, Sandy Jo 35, Liz Proctor 35, with a 2 for Mary Anne Ward. A shared lunch was enjoyed by all.

And, from last Saturday (March 3), the ladies played J Logan, and winners were Cynthia Shailes with 41, Flo Smith 40, with 2s for Smith, Elaine Hammond and Lynn Masters: “Well done, girls!” HOUHORA. Conditions were apparently more suitable for water polo than golf at Houhora on Sunday so the locals’ weekend bash had to be cancelled. In other news, results from the nine-hole midweek haggle last week (February 28) saw Richard Thompson first with 22 stableford points, followed by Ivor Bates 21, 2, and Ian Davis 19, 3. Play this Sunday will take place after the club’s AGM has been held. KAITAIA MEN. Last weekend the men had a fun day playing off the yellow tees, traditiona­lly the women’s, with Simon Yates emerging on top after shooting a 75 off the stick.

“Rumour has it he is contemplat­ing becoming a regular Wednesday golfer,” someone smirked. Best results were, S Yates 46 stableford­s, S Semenoff, J Hinchco 42.

This coming Saturday sees the men holding their annual 18-Hole Open with those yet to enter advised they can do so on the day.
