I would like to thank the staff of FNDC for their prompt attention in grading and metalling Upper Hillcrest Road, Kaikohe two days after I phoned them informing them that it needed doing.

Well done, people. Rogers and Pak’nSave for providing their customers with alternativ­es to plastic bags, Rogers and Rogers with their brown paper bags and Pak’nSave with their cardboard boxes, both free, by the way.

Scientists tell us that by the year 2050 the total weight of plastic in our oceans will be greater than the weight of fish. Therefore, I wish to make known to all and sundry that if I have a choice between retailers in the fair town of Kaitaia, I will choose the one offering free alternativ­es to plastic bags, every time.

And wouldn’t it be great if we were all of the same mind and our retailers responded positively and we became the first town in the country to eliminate all plastic bags? The Brown Paper Bag Town. “Good old Kaitaia, where they care about our oceans, let’s go visit.” apparently this behaviour was dealt with at the time, and another independen­t report is now imminent.

Let us be quite clear however, there can be no excuse for any uninvited propositio­ning or intimidati­on in the workplace – everyone, both male and female, is entitled to feel safe and secure in this environmen­t.

There seems to be no suggestion of any unlawful or criminal behaviour here, but if that is not correct then the police should investigat­e and-
