The Northland Age

Lofty heights

Re the completely stuffed-up census.

How could such qualified experts get it so wrong? It’s simple, as they probably went to the same university as leading members of the Ministry of Education, who have misinformed ministers and all the public, that most New Zealand- qualified successful classroom teachers don’t know what they are talking about.

Perhaps it’s the rarefied air they were breathing in their ivory towers. They should have been down in the over-crowded smell of classrooms experiencing the constant flow of problems dealt with every day by teachers, mainly on their own.

These people are often so far from reality they could teach a 50-year-old farmer how to put in a strainer post, and Aunt Mary how to bake an apple pie.

Hopefully the new Minister of Education will take advice from professional teachers’ organisations.

Yes I used my computer to fill in the census, as 28 years ago my pupils taught me how to use one.
