Doubtless Bay floral art club re-elects officers

-

The 12 members who turned out for the Doubtless Bay Floral Art Club annual general meeting weren’t wasting any time.

No changes were made to the executive. Sharron Nicholas was elected for another year as president, with Shelley Wiblin secretary and Gael Black treasurer. The committee also included Bev Rouse and Leslie Whitehorn. Hilary Francis will look after the club library, Kathy Graham will record the monthly competition points, Carol Allison will be in charge of the sales table and ensuring the required floral art supplies are available, and Jennifer Silcock will write the monthly newsletter and newspaper report.

Sharron’s president’s report outlined the club’s activities over the last year, including the Christmas celebration with friends from the Kaitaia Floral Art Club. The party included the presentation of the year’s silverware winners, with Carol Allison taking home the trophy for most points, Leslie Whitehorn the Hyla Smith Cup for the most innovative designs decided by members’ votes, and Shelley Wiblin the trophy for miniature designs, little works of art in their own right.

One important point of discussion was the need to attract new members.

The club meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the St. John Hall at Cooper’s Beach, with members gathering at 10am to complete their designs before the meeting at 11am. Lunch is a social affair, relaxed and chatty, followed by an auction-style trading table. Most days feature some sort of tuition, usually pertaining to the title of the next monthly competition.

Anyone who might be interested will be made most welcome, and inspired to learn something new.

The results of last month’s own choice competition (Hearts and Flowers) were:

Intermediate: Kathy Graham 1, Gael Black 2, Leslie Whitehorn 3. Senior: Jennifer Silcock 1. Bronze: Dot Sykes 1, Ina Shalders and Bev Rouse 2 equal.

Gael Black won the Hyla Smith Cup and Ina Shalders the raffle.

The next meeting is on Tuesday next week (March 20), at the St. John Hall, Cooper’s Beach, starting at 10am, the competition an Egyptian period design. All enquiries to Bev, phone (09) 406-1600.
