Arts grants for all six Northland art projects
The Far North Creative Communities Scheme Assessment Committee met in Kaikohe last week to consider six arts funding applications, and granted all six.
They were the Hokianga Community Education Trust’s Hokianga Book Festival at Rawene ($2000); Maud Cook-Davies’ Untold Stories from the Karae Kaauta exhibition at Kings Theatre Creative in Kawakawa ($2400); Valerie Hunton’s Women at Work — My Pacific Journey exhibition catalogue (Kings Theatre, $2000); Liz Russell’s ‘Koffie Tour — African traditional drum & dance,’ Far North and Kaipara ($2400); Sarah Burren’s ‘Heaven and Earth, Rangi and Papa’s magical glowin-the-dark Matariki puppet show (Kaitaia and Kerikeri, $2900); and Village Arts Kohukohu’s Orite . . . rite . . . he rereke/All the same but different Northtec Applied Arts alumni exhibition ($1630).
Newly-elected chairman Wally Hicks said the committee members had been impressed by the range of art forms, diversity of artists, community benefits and quality of applications.
“With artists of this calibre submitting such a variety of projects, Far North arts are in pretty good shape,” he said.
Janet Planet was elected deputy chair, and the committee thanked Far North District councillor Sally Macauley for her long service as chair. She will remain on Creative Communities as the council representative.
Meetings administrator Aisha Huriwai also received thanks.
The Creative Communities Scheme assesses applications to fund arts projects four times every year. Application forms, guidelines and deadlines are on the FNDC website (www.fndc.govt.nz/services/community/creative-communities-scheme), along with contact details for CCS committee members who can advise on making applications.
“We want to support every applicant we can, including first-time projects from beginning and emerging artists,” committee member Lynn Whittaker, Kaikohe Community Arts Council, said.
“We hope everyone who is eligible will apply under one of the three funding criteria — access and participation, diversity and young people — which covers almost every imaginable art form.”
The next deadline for applications is Friday May 4, the day before the assessment committee meets.
