Slip roadworks brings early start to Te Hononga work

-

The cloud that is the massive slip at Lemon’s Hill, on State Highway 11, has had a major silver lining for Kawakawa.

Following discussions with the NZ Transport Agency, the Kawakawa Hundertwasser Park Charitable Trust, along with the Far North District Council and project manager Far North Holdings, has decided to make an early start on Te Hononga site works.

Taking delivery of more than 3000 cubic metres of fill from the slip would save money on earthworks and help clear SH11, a spokesman said.

That meant that, as of yesterday, half of the carpark behind the Hundertwasser Toilets and FNDC library/service centre would be fenced off and closed for public parking. That would leave three public car parks in Kawakawa — behind Hammer Hardware, opposite the Hunter Star, and the Kawakawa War Memorial.

Fulton Hogan, which is managing the slip repair, is also providing staff to help manage traffic flow and access to the trucks delivering the soil.

The public is still able to use the two public toilets in the park and access the walkway through to the original Hundertwasser Toilets and public library. Freedom campers are also still able to park at the rear of the site, or use the alternative site by the Kawakawa Bowling Club.

Construction is planned to begin in September 2018, when the carpark will be completely closed for about 14 months.
