Busy autumn season at Cooper’s

-

A field of 42 local club members had their names down to play in the Gold Coast Mixed Drawn Triples tournament at Coopers Beach on Tuesday, April 17.

While the match committee drew the names out to make up the teams, the members enjoyed a coffee and a chat. Once the 14 teams were sorted and called out, accompanied by with the usual oohs and aahs of the various combinations, it was out onto the green to play four games of 1 hour 10 minutes on wins, ends, points.

At the end of a friendly, relaxing day, results were, Ross Hulme, Sue Smith, Pom Kaire 4 wins, 26 ends, 51 points, 1; Pam Naylor, Clive Scahill, Trish Breckon 31⁄2, 24, 47, 2; and, Dennis Breckon, Barbara Scahill, Steve Barber 3, 25, 51, 3.

Last year’s winner Jack Hughes was awarded the chocolate fish along with his team of Barrie Morgan and Lorraine Walter. Thanks went to everyone concerned for running the day and to all the members who entered, which made for such a great turnout. ***|** MIXED FOURS. In more belated news, the 26 teams competing at the annual Doubtless Bay Mixed Fours tournament in late March were greeted by three days of very warm weather.

Players came from Australia, Putaruru, and several Auckland and Northland clubs to join the various Far North club teams competing at the three-day event, which ran from March 20-22.

Social highlight included a Monday night get-together over drinks and nibbles, and Wednesday night’s meal of ham, chicken and a variety of salads provided by members, followed by dessert and then music, with dancing and singing for those that had enough energy left. There were also daily lucky team draws and a variety of raffles featuring prizes generously donated by local businesses and members over the three days.

The top 14 teams progressed to the main event, with the remaining 12 teams contesting the consolation event on Thursday.

Organisers thanked the regulars who attend each year and extended a warm welcome to the newcomers. It was noted that events of this scale do not happen without the support of some generous sponsors, while the input by club members and their family and friends was also greatly appreciated.

While the results were being collated, the ladies from the Far North Hospice provided a fantastic afternoon tea as a fundraiser with donations raising more than $1000.
