Homeward bound from Canada
An experienced planner, who has helped manage the growth of Canada’s fourth-largest city, is about to return to New Zealand to join the Far North District Council’s Strategic Leadership Team.
Darrell Sargent will take up his position as general manager — strategic planning and policy on October 23, succeeding Kath Ross, who became the Masterton District Council’s chief executive last month.
Mr Sargent, who is currently a planning manager for the city of Calgary, has held a number of project management and planning roles since he moved to Canada in 2011.
Prior to that he had worked for Meridian Energy in Christchurch and the Northland Regional Council, based in Whanga¯rei.
FNDC chief executive Shaun Clarke said he was pleased that the council had been able to recruit such a high-calibre leader to fill a strategically important position.
“We were looking for a big picture thinker who could lead the development of strategies and plans that deliver results on the ground,” he said.
“Darrell’s solid planning experience in a dynamic environment, combined with his technical competencies and proven leadership abilities, made him a strong candidate. We are excited by what he will bring to the organisation and district.”
Mr Clarke thanked Sheryl Gavin, his manager — corporate planning and engagement, who had replaced Ms Ross in an acting capacity.
“Sheryl has done a fantastic job ensuring several important policy initiatives and consultations have been rolled out smoothly, and she will continue in this role until Darrell is on board,” he said.
Mr Sargent said he was impressed with the leadership calibre at the Far North District Council, and was looking forward to working with administration and council members for the betterment of the Far North’s economic, environmental and social wellbeing.
