Houhora greens open for business
Forecast rain which threatened most of the day managed to hold off until the last bowler had left the green at the Houhora Bowling Club’s opening day mixed triples tournament last month.
President Barrie Kinnear opened proceedings at the Whenua Hou-sponsored event on Saturday, September 22 by welcoming the visiting bowlers from Cooper’s Beach, Church Road,
RSA and Houhora. He also introduced the incoming committee for the upcoming season before Douglas and Elizabeth Mansell conducted a karakia, then explained the history of the Memorial Trophy and recited the list of names engraved on the trophy.
First placegetters Jean Huxtable, Joanne Milich and Rose Timoko were presented with the Memorial Trophy after finishing the day with 4 wins, 25 ends and 56 points. Runners-up were Kevin Briscoe, Val Jones and Lillian Wells with 3, 20, 39; while third place went to Brian Bellas, Barrie Kinnear and Christine Stratton with 2.5, 26, 42.
■ UPCOMING tournaments at Houhora include the Wagener Engineering Mixed Pairs next Tuesday (October 16), the Rarawa Enterprises 2x4x2 Mixed Pairs on October 30 (entries to Marge Milich (09)406-8837) along with the the start of the highly anticipated Twilight Competition on Thursdays, starting October 18 at 6pm.
