Houhora greens open for busi­ness

Fore­cast rain which threat­ened most of the day man­aged to hold off un­til the last bowler had left the green at the Houhora Bowl­ing Club’s open­ing day mixed triples tournament last month.

Pres­i­dent Bar­rie Kin­n­ear opened pro­ceed­ings at the Whenua Hou-spon­sored event on Satur­day, Septem­ber 22 by wel­com­ing the vis­it­ing bowlers from Cooper’s Beach, Church Road,

RSA and Houhora. He also in­tro­duced the in­com­ing com­mit­tee for the up­com­ing sea­son be­fore Dou­glas and El­iz­a­beth Mansell con­ducted a karakia, then ex­plained the his­tory of the Me­mo­rial Tro­phy and re­cited the list of names en­graved on the tro­phy.

First placeget­ters Jean Huxtable, Joanne Milich and Rose Timoko were pre­sented with the Me­mo­rial Tro­phy af­ter fin­ish­ing the day with 4 wins, 25 ends and 56 points. Run­ners-up were Kevin Briscoe, Val Jones and Lil­lian Wells with 3, 20, 39; while third place went to Brian Bel­las, Bar­rie Kin­n­ear and Chris­tine Strat­ton with 2.5, 26, 42.

■ UP­COM­ING tour­na­ments at Houhora in­clude the Wa­gener En­gi­neer­ing Mixed Pairs next Tues­day (Oc­to­ber 16), the Rarawa En­ter­prises 2x4x2 Mixed Pairs on Oc­to­ber 30 (en­tries to Marge Milich (09)406-8837) along with the the start of the highly an­tic­i­pated Twi­light Com­pe­ti­tion on Thurs­days, start­ing Oc­to­ber 18 at 6pm.
