Chilly conditions at Cooper’s

-

The first domestic titles of the Cooper’s Beach Bowling Club’s 2018/19 programme were decided earlier this month.

Five men’s teams and four women’s teams were entered to play four games on a two-life system of 15 ends or 13⁄4 hours, with no time limit for the final/ possible final in a two-day event held on the weekend of October 13-14.

The women’s event was completed on Saturday with Margaret Wildbore, Glenis Love, Gaye Parker and Mary Wright taking the honours — and retaining both lives in the process — after beating Pam Naylor, Kyra Rapana, Pam Roughton and Sue Smith by 15-11.

It was noted the Naylorskipped team had the shots to either win the game or draw to play an extra end, but the Wildbore-led trio managed to sneak a bowl in to cut them down and retain their title. Other teams contesting the title were Bev Shand, Ngaire Watts, Pat Rayner and Patsy Thornton; and Liz Walters, Val Hall, Barbara Scahill and Lyn Larkan.

The men’s title was taken out in nail-biting style by Ross Hulme, Doug Robb, Ken Smith and Barry Townsley by 14-12 over Jim Naylor, Dennis Breckon, Garry Sparnon and Clive Scahill. Other teams were, Dave Roughton, Dennis Lattimer, Clive Holt, Mike Bairstow; Nigel Leslie, Peter Wilson, Allen Larkan, Denis Hailey; and, Jack Hughes, Geoff Laird, Trevor Wilcox, John Rapana.

A report noted everyone was dressed up like eskimos on the Saturday as it was very cold due to the wind, while special thanks went to Sheryll for turning the heater on when everyone came in off the green, which was most appreciated. Thanks also were extended to all who competed and played the games in good spirit, along with Allen and Lyn for marking the greens, the match committee and all who assisted over the two days.

The two winning teams were wished all the best for when they represent the club at the Bowls Far North Centre champion of champions later in the season.

■ The next event at Cooper’s Beach is the Bronia Stockwell Any Combination Open Triples on Tuesday, November 13. Cost to enter is $45 per team, with lunch provided. Entries to Margaret Wildbore 406-1191 or the club 406-0330.
